It can be hard to teach children what Christmas is really all about, the shops are full of decorations, sometimes from as early as September. The summer has barely finished and Christmas suddenly starts. Since you cannot deny the arrival of Christmas to your children you have to think of another way to slow down their bombardment of lists of toys which they think that father Christmas should supply. This is where a list of Christmas craft ideas is all important. Christmas crafts are more than just about making the odd paper chain, it is about learning about Christmas, learning that the best things are often home made and also turning what can be a very stressful time of year into productive family time.
First of all, to get into the Christmas mood you'll need some decorations around the home and for the tree.Remember, that if you're visiting people before Christmas a nice gift to give to thank them for their hospitality is a home made Christmas decoration. Christmas decorations are the best place to start with you Christmas craft ideas, partly because they are easy, but also because your children will see instant results.
If you want to get your Christmas craft ideas started quickly it may be worth visiting a craft shop to pick up some materials, however, you will be amazed how many useful items are already in your home and can be used. If you are going to collect the materials for your Christmas craft ideas then you will need a large box, preferably in the kitchen, in which to store your materials. Before you put anything in the bin think about whether you can use it. The inside of a crisp packed is silver and shiny, great for sticking onto things. Your egg boxes can be cut to make Christmas bell shapes to hang on your Christmas tree. If you want them to make a noise simply attach a couple of metal objects hanging inside which ill create a tinkling sound when tapped.
Remember that at the end of the twelve days of Christmas you will need to pack away the Christmas decorations.Since you will have plenty more Christmas craft ideas for next year you might not want to keep everything which the children have made, but it is nice for the each to choose a couple of items to keep. Make sure that the items they choose to keep have their names on them and the year. After a couple of years you will be able to see how well they have progressed and you will have a memento from each year. You will also be able to see how over the years your Christmas craft ideas have got progressively inspired.
Christmas is a great time of year for the family, and you can have lots of fun with Christmas craft ideas, while still saving money, so happy sticking and gluing.

Calligraphy Pens Aren't Quite Straightforward
A pen that is made up of only two pieces may seem like a fairly rudimentary and easy to use object. Mastering the calligraphy pen, though, will take some getting used to before you will be able to consider yourself proficient. When you think about buying and using a calligraphy dip pen there are some tips that you should take into consideration.
A dip pen is a kind of calligraphy pen made up with a handle and one of a range of differently sized nibs. The handle may be made of wood, bone, metal, glass or plastic. Some of these nibs have an ink reservoir permanently attached while others have a slip-on version.
Although fountain pens are an option for some types of calligraphy, the types of inks required for quality calligraphy are unsuitable for the fountain pen. Old-time dip pens were charged with ink by dipping the nib into ink before writing, this is not the only way to add ink to a calligraphy pen. In fact the dip pen can be recharged with ink by feeding it with a syringe, a paintbrush or an eye-dropper so that you can better control the flow of ink.
When connecting the nib to the pen holder you must push the nib firmly into place so that the dip pen does not shake when you write. The nib should be sitting securely between the metal prongs inside the pen holder and its outer shell.
A little word of caution about pen nib sizes. Although they may all range in size from a 0 to a 6, some manufacturers have made their smallest size nib a size 6 and worked up as the number have fallen. Most other manufacturers increase the number size as the pen nib size increases, so a 0 is the smallest and so on. This problem is alleviated to an extent when buying a complete set of pen nibs from the same maker, but familiarising yourself certain manufacturers standards is a good idea.
Once you've got your new calligraphy pen, the first thing you need to do is give it a good clean with detergent and water and then dry it completely afterward. The thin layer of oil that most nibs have applied to them should be removed before the first time you use them.
When choosing a dip pen over a fountain pen, consider the following advantages the dip pen affords you. A wide range of inks can be used with a dip pen. Inks such as India ink, traditional iron gall ink or acrylic inks will work fine in a dip pen while these kinds of inks will clog up and ruin a fountain pen. Naturally, the fact that you can interchange pen nibs gives the dip pen a much greater flexibility over the fountain pen. Price is a further advantage that a dip pen gives you with replacing nibs a lot cheaper than replacing entire pens.
You will ensure the life of your dip pen is a long one if you are diligent in cleaning the nibs after use. Just as important after thoroughly cleaning the nibs is ensuring that they have been properly dried. You need to take care that your prized calligraphy pen nib hasn't rusted from one use to the next.
Buying a good quality calligraphy dip pen and pen nibs will ensure that you will start off with the best possible equipment for producing fine quality work. All that is left is practising often and making sure you clean your pen nibs without fail.
Find out more about the calligraphy pen as well as learning about the range of calligraphy pen nibs available. There are plenty of opportunities for buying an inexpensive calligraphy pen with such a wide range available to choose from.

Holiday Crafts to Make
For most people, Christmas is one of the most enjoyable and vibrant seasons of the year. It is also one of the best times to show off your creative side. There are numerous Christmas crafts to make during this holiday season!
Christmas crafts can be used for a number of purposes. Many people use Christmas crafts as holiday décor. Crafts, such as homemade Christmas balls, candy cane reindeer, and miniature Santa figurines can be used to adorn one’s homes and Christmas trees. Meanwhile, other crafts, such as scented candles, gift baskets or knitted clothing, can be given away as gifts to other people. Food, such as Christmas cookies or crackers, can be eaten or be used as decorations around the house.
Deciding on what Christmas craft to make can be overwhelming, with the many different crafts available. When choosing which Christmas crafts to make, take into consideration what crafts you or the receiver will have use for. Try checking out the local shops and stores to see what the current trends are for the season. Use Christmas craft books and various Internet resources to help you in the selection. Don’t forget to put your own special twist to the finished product so that it will remain unique and one-of-a-kind. You don’t have to limit yourself to just one – make as many as you want!
Although making Christmas crafts can take some time and can occasionally be quite tedious, a lot of people continue to create and give away Christmas crafts for several reasons. First of all, Christmas crafts are more personal than gifts bought from the store. Time and effort is required to create high-quality crafts to be used at home or to be given away as presents. Some people also include in the designs the name of the receiver of the gift, making it even more special and personalized.
Another great thing about Christmas crafts is that they aren’t expensive. Some Christmas crafts, such as pinecone angels or snowman puppets, can be used to decorate your living spaces even after Christmas. If the crafts are preserved well, they can even be used years after.
Finally, making Christmas crafts is a great time to bond with your family and friends. Keep your children busy but happy by having them help out and show off their artistic side. Take time out to set the table for Christmas dinner or decorate the Christmas tree together. Making Christmas crafts is definitely a rewarding experience that you and your family can share!
Don't lose your Family Photos
Digital cameras make it easy to take lots of photos, but you can easily find yourself without any of them if your computer crashes. All the memories preserved in your family photos now forever lost.
Most people who do backup their photos do it to CD's or DVD's. But this is a feel good measure that does little good. CD's and DVD's can start showing errors within three years even when stored in the best of conditions.Only perfect conditions will prevent these errors from happening faster.
And sharing your family photos between your computer, your mates, your kids, is just burdensome. Most just email pictures around the same household or using a free service that imposes restrictions on you. But there is a much better way that is both inexpensive and easy to use, Internet Attached Storage.
Internet Attached Storage is the combination of Online Backup, local network disk, and file sharing (like OPENRSM CloudBackup). You don't have to give away information and you get to backup all your other key data (like email, documents, spreadsheets) as well.
Here's how it works. You create an with an Internet Attached Storage provider. You then set up the provided software on every computer with the network drive option selected. Each computer then automatically backs up to a seperate area and will also show the shared folder as a local volume. Here is the very best thing of all.A shared folder can be created. This makes the folder appear local on every computer you and your family uses.
No more emailing photos, no more using services that make you give up your privacy. And all the computers have backup for your other important files (like banking, documents, email) as well as having all those photos available from every computer. This saves loads of space and if bad things happen (like accidental deletion, hard disk failure, etc.) a previous version is in your Internet Attached Storage area.So if you don't discover a damaged photo immediatly you still have the original available.
The important things to remember are.Relying on CDs is a risk you shouldn't take if your photos are important to you. They scratch easily. Also, recorded CDs can degrade quickly (some in just a couple years). Most online photo sites seem free, but between the emails, popup ads, and restrictive rules your really paying for it.Internet Attached Storage keeps a backup of your images in the security of a remote place away from danger. Keeping photos organized makes everything easier because Internet Attached Storage mirrors the structure of your own disk. Ensure you automatically backup new photos, you don't want to lose pictures because you forgot that one time.Make it automatic so remembering to do it is one less task to do.
Not every online backup or Internet Attached Storage provider have advanced synchronization, automation, or network drive and folder sharing features. We've looked at many of these services and think you should use OPENRSM CloudBackup. It has the automation, ease of use, advanced file sharing features, and low cost you need to make sure that the pictures of your family don't disappear from your computer.
Candle Making Supplies: What You’ll Need to Make Candles
Whether you decide to take up candle making as a hobby or as a business venture, you first have to know what materials you need before you can actually start the process. Here is a list of candle making supplies that you have to put together to make your own candles.
Wax: The foremost candle making supply that you must have is the candle base or wax. There are different kinds of waxes available, depending on the kind of candle you want to make. The basic kinds of waxes include paraffin, beeswax, soy wax and vegetable wax. The most commonly used of these is paraffin. You can buy wax in bulk as slabs, usually for a cheaper price. There are also less conventional choices, such as palm wax and gel, which you may want to try out.
Wick: Wicks come in different sizes and thicknesses. Thicker wicks are best used for bigger candles. This allows the entire candle to burn cleanly, melting even the edges. Although there are a variety of thicknesses, most craft stores only sell a couple of sizes. At the very least, the stores sell wicks that can be used for candles of standard sizes, and that will work well with the molds they’re selling. Also, the stores will probably have pre-trimmed wicks with a piece of metal at one end, which are best used for votive candles.
Dyes: Dyes for coloring your candles can be bought in blocks or chips. Add a chip of dye while the wax is melting; don’t put in too much, because some dyes tend to give a strong color even when only a small amount is used. Make sure that you do not get anything on your clothes or other fabric, as candle dye tends to stain permanently.
Scents: Scents that you can use for your candles typically come in small glass containers. These scents are manufactured chemically, and may give off a very strong scent; it is best to add only a few drops while the wax is melting. Start by using the most popular scents, such as vanilla, cinnamon and floral scents.
Molds: A wide assortment of candle molds is available from most craft stores. Take your pick – from basic shapes, such as cylinders, cubes and pyramids to more complicated shapes and figures, such as hearts, stars, roses and even Santa Clause. These molds are available in both metal and plastic pieces. The best part about this candle making supply is that, although these molds are available at stores, you can make them on your own using materials at home! There is no limit to what you can do!
Other Supplies: The aforementioned items are the essentials in candle making; however, there are other candle making supplies you can use. You can buy containers in different sizes where you can place the glasses for better packaging. You can also use stamps and stencils to give your candles great designs. Try them and make your candles stand out!

Candles That Won't Let You Down
The beeswax candles are currently at the very top in the candles world. They are also the most expensive candles for very good reason. In addition, beeswax candles are also some of the cleanest candle varieties.
Beeswax candles compete in the market against three different competitors, namely, soy wax candles, gel candles, and paraffin candles. You will see that the competitors have lower quality and are less pricey.
Beeswax candles are made from wax collected from bee hives by commercial bee farmers. To prepare the candle making process, the beeswax itself is being processed and purified. Heating the wax in a hot water is what a purification process is all about.
You will be able to find many different forms and shapes of these candles, as well as finding unscented and scented types. One of the reasons why beeswax candles are considered top-of-the-line is their burning characteristics. The difference is that some other candles do not emit such a powerful yellow color and burn with such warm flames.
There is only a small amount of wax dripping from a beeswax candles.
A lot of different religious services are using these candles just for the characteristics they have. Some religious institutions like the Catholic Church make heavy use of candles during their services. Those candles would be a big problem if they were dripping their wax everywhere.
They are using beeswax candles because they do not drip wax, and this is how the problem is solved. Another advantage of beeswax candles is that they produce very little smoke. In other words, they are very clean burning candles. This characteristic makes them desirable candles to burn with children in the home and also generally to protect your family's respiratory systems.
These candles do not produce the petroleum smell and that you often get with paraffin candles and they do not produce the soot that can leave dark spots against your walls or on your ceiling.
Even though the beeswax candles are more expensive due to the labor involved during the farming process, their benefits make them worth the additional expense.

Discovering The Art Of Knitting
If you're considering taking up a new hobby, it may be a good idea to learn to knit, especially if you have a large family and want to find ways that you can save money on clothing. Knitting is also a great way to relieve stress, and you'll get a sense of accomplishment once you're able to make the things that you see in stores. Here are some of the best sites and resources that will help you to enhance your new skill.
One of the best sources for helping you to learn to knit is www.hobbynetworksite.com. You'll get step by step instructions on how to tie knots, as well as how to find the right yarn to help you do the job. You'll need to start by choosing the type of yarn you want to use; types include worsted weight, chunky, and bulky, and it will take a different kind of yarn to complete different projects, so be sure to read the directions on the package carefully. The site will also teach you how to select the right needles and crochet hooks, so that you'll know how to manipulate the yarn in order to create the type of stitches you want.
Looking through a knitting related blog is also a great place to learn to knit. If you want to learn more about how to knit for the many charities that may be in your area, or if you've been practicing your skills and want to know where you can sell your new creations, you may want to check out sources like The Daily Knitter to find out how you can become better at knitting. You can also get links to clubs in your area that are made up of people who share the same interests. There are also a number of community calendars and blogs on the site that will help to point in the right direction.
Another tool you'll need when you learn to knit is a gauge card. This tool will help you to manipulate the needle through the yarn, and will get your hands used to creating the patterns that you want. The gauges are made of plastic or metal, and you can use them to determine which needle sizes you're going to need for each project, since the sizes of the needles tend to rub off after continued use. The gauges can also help you to determine which needles feel best in your hand when you learn to knit; you may find that metal or aluminum needles, which are the most common, don't work as well for you. If so, you can always choose from walnut needles, as well as plastic or bamboo.
Creative and a Pack Rat? Make Your Own Classic Movie Poster
I realized that I do not like to throw anything out, when unpacking in my new apartment. This includes old newspapers, magazines and postcards. I decided that instead of decorating my walls with prints, I would make my own classic movie poster. It’s an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity.
Anything Goes When Making a Classic Movie Poster
There are lots of different ways one could make a classic movie poster. A local artist at Chicago’s Halsted Market Days was framing record album covers using soundtracks of films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s or An American in Paris. This is a great way to make a classic movie poster, because it’s very inexpensive and easy to do. Go to the local used record shop where you can buy records for less than $5. For less than $30, you can buy an inexpensive, but nice-looking frame at a drugstore.
Another way of making a classic movie poster that involves actual work is making a collage. A collage is a great way to get rid of a lot of old magazines and newspapers. Again, this is a very inexpensive project, because most of the material you already have at home. You’ll only have to buy a poster board and a frame. Along with magazines and newspapers clippings, you could also use covers from VHS tapes, DVD’s or CD’s.
Use Your Imagination, but Remember People Have to Look at it
The only “danger” in making a classic movie poster on your own is that it might end up looking like a kindergartner’s art project from school. While beauty is subjective, and in the end, you have to put together what you like, there are tips for making your poster presentable and tasteful.
Having a theme is a great start. This theme could be a color scheme – using only black & white photographs will give the poster an old Hollywood glamour feel. You can also concentrate on one star, or even better have some sort of general theme in mind. My poster featured film stars of the 1940’s and 1950’s.
Another good idea would be to have shots of famous pairs – Bogie and Bacall, Spencer and Hepburn, Fred and Ginger. You can also have a classic movie poster featuring famous screen clowns like Charlie Chaplin, Abbot and Costello, or Laurel and Hardy.
Reflecting your taste and what you believe to be classic film is the most important thing to remember when making this poster. As long as you put your creativity into it, any movie poster will look like a classic and don't be worried if your poster reflects Shaft more than it does Casablanca.
Making your own classic movie poster is an excellent way to clean out the clutter in your house, as well as a way to show your creativity...View more articles at www.posters.jsgenterprises.com.

Making Deliciously Scented Candles
By adding scented candles to any room you can set the mood for people in the room. Scented candles can stimulate, relax, and help to bring back memories of good times. A very subtle scented candle is more attractive to many people. They can bring about a change in mood without bringing awareness to the reason for the change.
Using Scents in Your Home Made Candles
It is important that when adding scents to your candles that you add those scents specifically made for candles or pure essential oils. Other types of scents have additives that can affect how your candle burns or how the scent smells once heated with paraffin.
It is recommended that when you first start making scented candles that you use only one scent. By doing so you are able to experiment with the amount of oil that you will need to use to obtain the scent that you desire.
The usual ratio of wax to scent is one pound of wax to ½ -1 oz. of essential oil or candle scent. If you want a stronger scented candle you will need to find a special wax that doesn’t sweat the oil.
Scents are added after the wax has been melted but before pouring the wax into your mold, container, or free form candle. This allows the scent to mix evenly throughout your candle. Remember to have a small amount of the scented wax to use for topping off your candle. Paraffin candles do tend to shrink some in the middle after hardening.
Experimenting to Find Your own Personal Scent
Don’t be afraid to experiment with creating scents. When creating your own scents you will need a medicine dropper, small glass dish, toothpicks, cotton swabs, small brown bottle or bottles, different essential oils and some ground coffee.
Remember these are for candles so you don’t want to mix these oils with bases. Note that good essential oils can be a little expensive but they go a long way. There are many places to buy essential oils such as your local craft store.
Once you have everything assembled, place paper under your working area; old newspapers work well for these projects. In the small glass dish place two drops of the main essential oil that you want to use. Put a small drop of another essential oil that you have chosen to blend with the first oil into the glass dish. Mix both oils in the dish with a toothpick. Walk away from the oils and smell the coffee to clear the mingling fragrances from nose. Once you return to the dish, smell the oils from a distance, rather than placing your nose too close, to get a better idea of how the fragrance you have created smells. You can mix any combination of oils using this technique to determine your likes and dislikes.
Once you have achieved the fragrance you love, mix the oils in the same manner or ratio that you used when creating it. For example if you used 2 drops of bergamot and 1 drop of rose, you may mix 2 oz of bergamot with 1 oz of rose to create enough scent for your candle.
Remember that you only use ½ - 1 oz of oil to a pound of wax. Use caution and never use more than this amount unless you are using a special wax that allows more oil to be added. This is because essential oils are flammable.
Once you have created your fragrance, store the oil in a small glass brown bottle in a cool area to protect the oils from the light and extreme temperatures. Let the oil infuse for approximately three days prior to use. Test the oil on a cotton swab to see how much, if any, the fragrance has changed since storing it. Some change usually occurs.
Well you have done it! You have created a special fragrance that is of your own design to be used in your candles. There will be no stopping you now. Remember, as with any project, safety first!
Making Soy Candles the Easy Way!
People choose soy candles for many good reasons. When looking at making candles you will find that soy candles are earth friendly and a renewable resource. What better reasons than these to make this type of candles? All candles produce some soot but soy candles tend to produce less than most. Soy candles are also known to last longer than most conventional candles. Soy candle wax is produced in the United States.
Equipment and Supplies for Making Soy Candles
The type of equipment and supplies you will need to make your soy candles depend on what style you want. You can make pillar type candles, tarts for burners, or container candles.
Container candles are the easiest to make and is the one that will be covered here. The nice thing about using soy wax is that it cleans up well with soap and water.
What You Will Need
You will need a microwave safe container, preferably a microwave safe glass measuring cup to hold and melt your wax, wicks, and a clean container to put your candle in. There are fragrances and dyes specifically for soy wax candles. If you desire these, then make sure you have them ready when creating your candle. A word of caution here, be sure to buy high quality oils that are strong and are specifically for soy candles!
You will also need a wooden spoon, potholders and a clean dry container to put your candle into. Soy wax comes in soft block or in flakes. The best way to purchase this type of wax is in flakes, this allows you to measure the amount of wax needed for different projects.
You are Ready to Create
Now you are ready to go. You have everything together, but how do you know how much wax you will need to melt? By using the microwave safe measuring cup, and by knowing the amount of liquid your container holds you will know the amount of soy wax that you need to melt. If it is a 14 oz. container then you will need approximately 13 oz of melted wax.
Melt the wax in the microwave. Start with a few minutes and continue to check until all the soy wax is melted. During the melting process, if you see you are going to need more wax, then add it to what is already melting. Be sure that all the wax is melted.
While the wax is melting take the wick and place the metal portion into the bottom of your container with just a bit of hot glue. This will adhere quickly so you can use a pencil to keep the wick centered by wrapping a small portion of the wick around the pencil. Secure the pencil to the container.
Once the right amount of wax is melted add the dye and stir to mix well. You may then add your fragrance according to the manufactures suggestions. Once all is mixed pour slowly into your container. Be sure that the wick stays to the center for an even burning candle.
You have just created your first earth friendly and beautiful soy candle. You are ready to make some as gifts so that others may enjoy these wonderful candles. Don’t forget to add a little note about clean up for the container after the candle has been used, and about how soy candles are earth friendly!
How To Create Your Own Funky Jewellery
Did you ever consider making your own personalised jewellery. Perhaps you played with beads when you were younger but have never touched them since. The easiest jewelry to create is probably a necklace and with some
ingenuity can look either funky or elegant and appropriate in both cases to the rest of the outfit you are wearing.
First let us decide what to make the necklace from. You can buy semiprecious stones such as jade, amber or other semiprecious jewels already polished and with holes in them ready to string. Or you can obtain raw stones and put more work in yourself. If you live near the sea, or go on holiday there, you can go beachcombing and look for stones, it is amazing what you can find, although you are unlikely to find anything truly valuable. However, this sort of jewellery is not about value, it’s about looks that complement your outfit.
The next step is to polish your stones. This will take some time. Start with a rough abrasive to get the basic shape and take the roughness off and gradually polish with softer abrasives and cloths until you finally get the finish you want. Do not hurry this process, the more care you take, the better the final jewel is likely to be.
Now you will want to make holes in your stones so that you may string them together. There are many tools out there you may use - the most obvious one being the miniature drills used by model makers. Line your beads up before drilling them so that you know exactly where to drill and again take care. Having invested all the time and effort into polishing your stones, it would be foolish to break or scratch them at this stage.
Next to string your beads. Jewellers thread is probably the best for this, although other threads could also be employed. Be careful, though, sewing cotton and the like will be too soft and will break and fishing line is to hard and may cut its way through your beads - and your neck if you are not careful. Ensure that you have the beads ordered as you want them before tying the thread. You can place them a number of times before finishing the knot, but once that knot is tied it will be difficult to change without starting over with a new piece of thread.
With some creativity and time it is possible to make some really personalised articles of jewellery. I know somebody who pierced orange pips to make a necklace - it looks great. Try carving and polishing small pieces of coal, it looks just like jet, with little or no cost. It may not last long, but this sort of jewellery is not meant to be an heirloom.
Invest in a Plastic Poster Frame
All kinds of posters make great collectibles. Do you have a couple of posters from memorable rock concerts? Maybe you prefer movie posters. Are there a few Star Wars works of art stashed around the house? Those cute, funny animal posters sell pretty well.
Whether you prefer circus posters, comic book posters or travel posters, remember that many of your treasures are collectible and growing in value. Posters are also very fragile. You need to take steps to protect your investments. A good way to accomplish that is by purchasing a plastic poster frame.
Protection
Some posters are made of flimsy material while others are made of more sturdy paper. Most posters, remember, were intended to advertise a specific product such as one concert, a certain travel package, or the release of a specific music album. These posters were never meant to survive the tests of time. Even sturdy paper is still paper and when exposed to air it dries out and discolors. It should also be mentioned that paper doesn't travel well either.
Creases, exposure to moisture and dust, and just plain age all decrease the value of a poster. Collectors have found it easy to laminate their posters, and that is fine if the posters are meant to give pleasure to the owner only. However, lamination decreases the value of the poster, too. A simple, plastic poster frame can protect the poster from air, moisture, and accidents while maintaining their value.
Beauty
These days they can do amazing things with plastic. A plastic poster frame is not just protection, it is display as well. You can choose a frame style, simple or elaborate, that will enhance the beauty of your posters and look attractive in your home as well. A sturdy, lightweight frame makes it easier to hang a poster safely. It provides the same kind of display that a poster has at a movie theater or travel agency.
Finding just the right plastic poster frame for your needs is quite simple. They are easy to find on the internet as well as available at stores that sell posters. Many sites that will sell you a poster will be happy to sell a plastic poster frame along with it. A plastic poster frame is an amazing find for the lover of posters. It combines the ability to display the treasures at the same time that it protects them from harm.
Posters are very fragile. You need to take precautions to guard your investments. A plastic poster frame is a good way to accomplish that...View more free atricles at www.posters.jsgenterprises.com.

Get Started WithThe Basic Sewing Supplies
Sewing was once upon a time a very popular practice with most households because ready-made clothes were not easily available as they are today. Mostly women enjoyed sewing clothes for the family, toys and even earn money working from home by sewing for friends and neighbors.
The sewing hobby disappeared today mainly because we don’t have the time to indulge any more. However, if you have recently stumbled over your grandmother’s sewing machine or just want to pamper your kids and their toys by being creative, here are the basic sewing supplies you will require in order to get started right away.
Sewing As a Hobby or Business
If you are sewing as a hobby or business you will require the same sewing supplies, which are: tape, scissors (usually titanium are best), needles, thread, tracing paper, seam ripper, marking pens for clothes, which are different then those used on paper, cutter glide and pin point tweezers.
There are a few other sewing supplies, which are usually only needed by those who are in business and sew on a daily basis such as, the little stick, which is a great tool to get into tight places like in the seam of a dress or coat to remove lint; radial rule and special tape for creating curves.
Other Things You May Need
While the above sewing supplies will get you started right away there will always be other things that you will need and find handy in due course such as, sewing baskets to organize the sewing supplies and always have it handy when needed; sewing books from where you can create different designs and draw ideas, finger tip cushion for the professionals, low shank walking foot for quilting and sewing table with a caddy to place those items that need to be handy but still out of the way.
Shopping for Sewing Supplies
Everything you need to get started sewing can be found at a good local store or department store. However, if you don't have a department store near you, you will be able to also find a large variety of stores and many bargains online. Sewing is a great hobby and a creative home business for mums that need to work from home. The whole family can be involved in projects such as making a quilt together and learning a trade that will never die as we will always need clothes and new fashion styles.
Making Scented Candles at Home
A great many of my friends have been asking me to share the secret of making a scented candle at home, though I tell them repeatedly that it is no great secret. Any web site or online manual can teach you the basics of making scented candles at home, and once you have mastered those, the rest is up to your imagination and creativity. Both these qualities, I have found, increase with experience, and never mind what they say about inborn creativity and genius.
However, since it does appear that plenty of people want to know just what it is that causes my candles to smell so good, I will begin by saying that the process of making a candle with the aroma of your choice is a simple one. As I have said before, the increasing demand for scented candles has caused a lot of enterprising folks to come up with books, magazines and web sites dedicated to the art of candle making.
To begin with, you need the right equipment, though that may seem obvious. I always stress this point because, despite its simplicity, candle making is easy only when you follow instructions correctly. Otherwise, you will find that it can be darned tricky as well!
So, depending on whether you are making a wax or gel candle, you will need enough of it, plus the ‘cooking equipment’, or the equipment needed to melt the wax and mould it. And obviously, you will need the essential oils that will give you the aroma of your choice. In my experience, I have always found it best to combine at least a couple of aromas, though beginners might find it easier to stick to one fragrance initially.
What a beginner definitely should not do is pack the candle with as much fragrance as possible. Most ordinary scented candles contain about 0.5 oz of essential oil, though if you want to intensify the fragrance, you may increase it to one whole ounce. However, any more and the scent that your candle gives will be unbearable, probably making you sick!
A lot of people confess to being intrigued by the scents that I use for my candles. ‘I just can’t place it, but it smells so good,’ is something that I hear all the time. Shall I tell you why? Well, I tend to experiment with the most unlikely combinations, most often based purely on instinct, and end up with a fragrance that is marvelous yet unidentifiable! For instance, the first time I used rose and cinnamon together, I was convinced I was headed for disaster. As it turned out, it became my most popular aroma! Similarly, I combined clove and iris to produce another well-appreciated fragrance. The point is, dear reader, it is largely up to you what fragrance you produce.
Finally, though I stuck to wax candles for a long time, I do believe that soy candles hold the scent much better than wax, and they also burn longer. The process of melting the soy wax is similar to that of ordinary wax, though you will probably need a double boiler. You add the color and scent as usual, and pour it into the mold of your choice. As you probably know, a staggering variety of molds are available in the market today. Once your candle is complete, do send me a sample!
Cross stitch is simply good therapy!
I always thought so but had no proof that cross stitching has therapeutic value that far surpasses its seemingly mundane nature. Now, there is solid anecdotal evidence from the most unexpected space. Fresh from the just completed 2008 Beijing Olympic Games!
It may help alleviate some of our Olympic withdrawal symptoms to know that cross stitch is a hobby popular with Chinese women Olympians, many of whom were gold medalists. Interestingly, these Olympians hail from diverse sports like weight-lifting, diving, pistol-shooters, badminton, basketball, canoeing, athletics and even heavy-weight judo!
The seeming disconnect between cross stitch and the stringent demands of their sports discipline initially invited disapproval from the hard-driving Chinese coaches. But as they say, results speak for themselves.
Liu Chunhong, who won the women’s 62-kg weightlifting gold medal, and has broken five world records on her way to gold, was quoted declaring that she feels the best in the world. Not after winning the medal, but after spending 4 to 5 days finishing her cross stitch piece! Fellow weightlifting gold medalists, Chen Xiexia (48-kg category) and Chen Yanqing (58-kg category) are also avid cross stitch hobbyists. Coach Chen Wenbin now ungrudgingly accepts that cross stitch is not a waste of time but an integral part of the weighting team’s activities.
25m-pistol gold medalist Chen Ying declares that an athlete's life is very boring. Cross stitch gives her something to look forward to after training hard on the range. After 3 or 4 days, she simply loves her cute piece of handiwork.
Tong Wen, the Chinese judoka who defeated reigning champion Maki Tsukada in the women's heavyweight judo finals at the Beijing Olympic Games on August 15 to win the gold metal, is needless to say “giant” in build. Yet she feels real feminine whenever she cross stitches!
There you have it, cross stitch is simply good therapy, even for incredibly tough-minded Olympians. Perhaps it is also one of their secret weapons?

Learn The Art Of Candle Making
The use of candles for light and heat is known to have existed in ancient times. The remains of candles have been found in the caves of France. It is believed that cavemen used them while painting and etching on the walls. It is believed those candles where made out of animal fat. The Egyptians used candles as well by dripping beeswax onto leave stems. The burning process of a candle involves the four basic elements of matter which are solids, liquids, gas, and plasma.
Today candle glass making is a fun hobby or craft. For some, it is a very profitable business venture. Candle making allows you to create some great designs from your candles. There is no limit to the shapes, sizes, and colors you can make your candles in. A candle is a device to provide light or fragrance. Candles have become very popular for the wonderful aromas more than for their ability to produce light. Some candles give off a popular smell such as vanilla or jasmine. Many others have the aroma of cinnamon or chocolate.
The body of a candle is generally made of paraffin wax. Beeswax is another substance that it can be made from. Paraffin is a plant derived wax. This wax can be purchased from Petroleum Refinery or the Specialty Wax Processor. Beeswax is also considered a natural wax, and is taken from honeybees. This is the substance the bees use to construct their honeycombs. The wick is centered in the candle before the wax dries. The wick is made of cotton fibers that have been braided together. The wick is very thin, but also very powerful. Sometimes candle makers will use a wick that is wider than normal to increase the size of the flame.
Safety is a very important part of candle making. The temperature of the hot wax can result in severe burns. There is also the risk of fire. Make sure your candle making area is set up properly and that you have a fire extinguisher in the area. Clean up spills quickly as they will become very slick, leading to falls if you walk across them.
To make wall candle making fun instead of frustrating, start will making simple candles. This is a great opportunity for you to discover what works well with your set up and gives you the chance to make necessary changes. Initially, work at implementing good safety habits and melting your wax at the proper temperatures. Experiment with different cooling processes. The process will become second nature to you once you have mastered the process. This is the right time to start experimenting with dyes, scents, and shapes for your candles.
The candle making process is easy to follow if you take your time and learn from your mistakes. Those who are impatient and take multitasking to an extreme will most likely not enjoy the art of candle making. However, it is very enjoyable by those who have plenty of time to take with the process and who enjoy creating things. Candle making supplies aren’t expensive so use the best you can. This will also help ensure your candles form well and burn properly.

It also is always better to purchase one that has a pocket or two for keeping your accessories in. If you decide on buying a large one, then always better to buy one with purse length handles, this will make it easy to carry it on your shoulders, for comfort and ease.
If you are purchasing a small bag to carry knitting materials for smaller projects. Then you need to consider one that has soft sides, this is so that you can fit extra material in it, without harming it. A drawstring or a short strap will make it easier to wrap the bag around your wrist, while carrying. If you carry bigger bags then it is possible that some of your smaller items may get misplaced.
It is not necessity to buy a knitting bag, if you are enthusiastic enough then you can make one for yourself. You could knit a bag, or even make it out of fabric. You will also find there are a lot of free patterns to choose from, if you do decide to make one. You can use any type of fabric or material to make your bag, as long as you choose a fabric that pleases you and is strong enough to carry your load.
A knitting bag not only makes you mobile, but also provides an opportunity to show your talents and latest projects to all your friends and family. Whether you be at your friends, family's or at your home and people ask you about your latest project or your knitting talents, then you can easily teach them a stitch or two by carrying an extra needles and yarns in your knitting bag.

If You're Interested in Woodworking as a Hobby, Read This
by Paul Cameron
Woodworking covers a variety of processes, such as cabinetmaking, joinery, marquetry, turning, and woodcarving. Even so, each and every skilled craftsperson at some time had to learn the basic principles of marking, measuring, dimensioning, assembling and finishing. These skills are the fundamentals of woodworking and are the nitty-gritty of woodworking, be it hobby or profession.
The ability to think in three dimensions is essential in order to mark up the wood and envision how one piece will fit with the other. Also, you need to figure out which tools will produce the best final result, taking into consideration the precision required and the attributes of the wood.
The procedure of cutting down the wood precisely to size is known as dimensioning - a process that's straightforward in theory but takes much repetition to hone. All except the most basic of woodworking projects call for cutting and putting together an assortment of joints. Long considered to be a test of a woodworker's skill, joinery requires unwavering hand-eye coordination. However, practice will help you discover the most effective means to secure one section of wood to another appealingly and inconspicuously without giving up durability.
An important addition to these basic skills is a knowledge of how wood actually performs. It's a unique, living thing that expands and contracts in various weather conditions, particularly humidity, and this has to be taken into account by every woodworker when planning and constructing a project. Some woods are simpler to work with than others, and each piece, irrespective of the type, is unique in the way the grain twists and turns.
There isn't one correct method to do anything in woodworking. The most effective method is the one that you're most comfortable with, and balances all the variables such as how much time is required to finish the project, what tools you have available, how important it is that your project is of the highest quality, and how much enjoyment you get from the process.
Their are lots of reasons for and against using either machines or hand tools in woodworking. Many believe that using hand tools lets you become familiar with cutting and forming the wood without affecting the grain. Other woodworking experts claim that it's often possible to finish a project in less time using hand tools due to the preparation involved in using mechanical tools. Some others believe the total opposite.
With a bit of patience, the proper tools and techniques, and a good design, you could be well on your way to creating something you'll appreciate for a long time to come.
Making Aromatherapy Candles
Aromatherapy is one of the biggest selling markets today. Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that can be used in conjunction with other types of stress relief. Aromatherapy candles have found their way into many homes, businesses, and alternative health practices. Aromatherapy candles are an excellent way to open up your senses and relieve stress.
Necessary Supplies
Before we begin to make these wonderful candles let us look at what equipment and supplies will be needed.
First you will need essential oils. Essential oils are obtained from plants using a specific method of distillation. Essential oils can be very expensive. The good thing about essential oils is that it only takes a small amount to produce the aroma that you want for your candle. Some people like to mix these essential oils to make a scent of their own. For now we will stick with just one basic essential oil. Bergamot is an essential oil used for tension and stress. It is also an essential oil that is used to help as an antidepressant because it is an uplifting effect.
The type of candle, whether it is a soy or paraffin, will determine the equipment needed. In this article we will show how to make a soy aromatherapy candle using the essential oil for the fragrance. You will need a measuring bowl made of glass to melt your wax, potholders to hold the wax when removing it from the microwave, a spoon, soap, water, a container, essential oil, and dye if desired. You will also need a wick, hot glue gun, and a pencil.
Creating Your Aromatherapy Candle
You are now ready to begin your journey on making your first aromatherapy candle. Let us take a take a look at wicks. The wick that you use for your aromatherapy candle can directly effect how your candle burns. Not all wicks are created equal. Always purchase the size wick that you need according to the diameter of your candle that you will be crafting.
Now, gather all your supplies and equipment. Place the appropriate amount of soy chip wax into the measuring cup. To know the amount of wax that you will need you will need to know the capacity of the container that you are putting your aromatherapy candle in. You can start with a small amount of soy wax chips and add more until you reach the desired amount of melted wax.
While the wax is melting prepare your container by using hot glue to attach the metal portion of the wick to the inside of the container. Use the pencil with a small amount of the wick wrapped around it to hold the wick in the middle. Secure the pencil to prevent movement while pouring the wax. Remove the melted wax carefully from the microwave to prevent burns. Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your melted wax. It is better to have little than to have too much. That way, when your candle burns, the fragrance does not overwhelm the person that it is for. This is the experimental part of aromatherapy and most sources do not agree on the amount to use.
Once the oil is in the melted soy wax, mix well and pour into your container. Be sure the wick is centered after pouring.
For aromatherapy candles using a less decorative glass or tin as the holder will help the person using the candle to concentrate on the aroma and not just on how the container looks. You now have a beautiful candle that is a wonderful gift to share. If your candle aroma is not right the first time you may have to experiment with the use of the essential oils to get it right. Don’t give up; you will create the perfect aromatherapy candle. Remember, mixing the oils is one way to create your own special aroma.
How To Landscape A Model Railroad
One of the more fun aspects of model railroading is planning and executing the scenery and landscaping that your track and engines will meander through " for some it is almost like playing God in that you can decide and create on any scene you desire.
From fanciful hobbit themes, alien worlds or realistic recreations there is nothing that you cannot create and display, all it takes is a plan, some materials, a little skill and some time.
First and foremost you need a plan or at least a concept.
- Do you want to duplicate an existing landscape? - Do you want a faithful historical recreation of a place now lost in time? - Are you more inclined to creating a never-before seen or unlikely scenario to wow the masses?
Making a choice on one theme for your layout and staying true to that theme is perhaps the most important keys to success. If you change your methods and style in the middle of your landscape the result will be inconsistencies that will detract from the overall impression you are trying to form.
Ideally those you invite to view your work will see a delightful scene and the harder they look the more detail enforcing that scene they will find. Nothing is more enjoyable then hearing those delighted squeals as a viewer notices ever more subtle details as they come closer and closer and the key to that is consistency.
Once you have a plan for the theme you need to decide on track placement and terrain. Many modelers create the terrain and then try to force the track to follow through that, just as occurs in real life " but one of the advantages of modeling vs. real life is that you can consider all aspects and requirements up front. If you know you will have a bend or a switch at certain points why design rough terrain that you will then try to overcome with 'grading' in your models at those points?
Next you should collect your materials " some items you can find around the house, others you may wish to purchase from dealers such as www.oakridgehobbies.com and www.jttmicroscale.com or your local hobby shop but always stay true to your plan. Just because you find an amazing little miniature you long to use doesn't mean it belongs in this model! Common materials you will need include:
1. Tables or Stands
2. Plywood (preferably outdoor grade) for base if using stands or building model train tables
3. Glues
4. Twigs, 'dirt' gravel, crushed or powdered stones, herbs etc. for plants and groundcover
5. Paints of various kinds for touch-up, covering the base and backgrounds, creating model railroad water areas, etc.
6. Poster board, wax paper, aluminum foil, tissues etc. for texturing and shaping
7. Styrofoam blocks and sheets for shaping
Optional items you may wish to use include:
8. Plaster of Paris and / or fiberglass
9. Talcum powder, pepper and salt, cayenne pepper " for texturing and colorants
10. Corkboard and cork 'paper'
11. Roof repair tar (for road surfaces etc.)
12. Paintable caulks and adhesives for securing items in place
Brother Knitting Machines-They Give A Perfect Finished Project
Knitting is mainly carried out in two ways, hand knitting and machine knitting. If you are looking to start machine knitting, then the best machine on the market is the brother knitting machine. If you do purchase one, then you will be able to create the most exquisite projects. As a manufacturer they are world renown for their quality and reliability.
They are Japanese made and all the latest technology is used in the design and manufacturing of them. There are two types that are available to you, these are the punch card machine and the electronic machine. If you plan to use one just at home, then purchase a standard gauge machine with 200 needles that are 4.5 mm apart. But if you plan to start a home business then purchase a bulk machine with 114 needles that are 9mm apart.
The distance between every needle determines the thickness of the yarn that can be used in the brother knitting machine. The yarn will be thicker if the needles are further apart and the closer the needles are together, then the yarn is thinner.
The punch card machine will produce patterns which are around 224 stitches wide. It is possible to repeat this pattern across the whole width of your project or use it to create motifs in specific parts of your project. But the only drawback of using this machine is that you have to create patterns that are either 24 stitches wide or in a number that is evenly divided into 24.
There is no such problem with the electronic version. The electronic version can produce patterns with one stitch to around 200 stitches.
Brother knitting machines can also be used to weave and knit reversible patterns. This machine can be fixed with external attachments like ribber attachments, which is used to undertake jacquard knitting. This type of knitting is similar to fairisle knitting but without any floats.
The electronic brother knitting machine can be used to create patterns that you can find on the internet. By using your computer you can download patterns and then scan them for use in your knitting projects. Another feature of this machine has an optional garter carriage which can be used to knit and purl in the same row.
If you use a single bed machine then you are free to do your other work while the machine knits for you. The automatic version uses one color yarn at a time, this accessory is only available with the standard gauge machines.
The brother knitting machine also has optional extra accessories like ribber attachments, four color changer, garter bar and so. But when ever you are buying a machine always buy it from the original distributors, this way you get the high quality machines with a full guarantee.
By using these knitting machines you can easily create project that are master pieces. These can be gifts to your family or loved ones and if you start your own home craft business, then you will be able to sell them.

Ancient Coins: An Amazing History Lesson
Lots of different cultures have been making coins for millennia. Ancient coins are made of different materials and using different processes than modern coins. Reflecting the culture they came from, ancient coins, just like modern ones teaches you a lot of pretty cool stuff about the history of that culture.
Ancient Roman Coins
About 290 BC Rome began making coins. The value was determined by the weight of the coin as they were made out of whatever metal was handy. Coins at that time were really just a standardized form of barter.
When people began putting images on ancient coins, they initially chose the images of gods. Various world conquerors saw themselves as gods, and began to put their images on ancient coins, as well. Julius Caesar was the first emperor of Rome, and Roman coinage from his time bears his image.
The story of the Roman Empire is told through ancient coins from Rome. They tell you who the emperor was, what was going on, and would be made to commemorate events that were important.
Roman coins are fun to collect because of the history, but also because there are lots of them. Wherever the Roman Empire reached, coins from Rome can be found. Just like today, whenever the empire needed cash to fund a new coliseum or war, they minted more money. Ancient coins from Rome are an inexpensive way to begin collecting ancient coins and are relatively easy to find.
Ancient Chinese Coins
As with everything else, China was minting coins while the Western world was still using pretty rocks for money. Rome used coins as early as 290 BC, but China was minting coins as early as 350 BC. In 250 BC they started using a round, minted coin with a square hole in the middle, and that's what Chinese coins looked like for 2,100 years.
With each dynasty memorialized in its coinage, Chinese coins tell history also.
Other Ancient Coins
The other ancient empires had their coins, too. There are Scythian coins, Parthian coins, Greek coins, and Babylonian coins. The oldest known coin is the Daric, used in the Persian Empire prior to 500 BC when it was conquered by Alexander the Great, who replaced it with his own coins that had his portrait on them. There may be coins older than that, but we don't know about them yet. If and when more ancient coins are found, however, they will tell us more about the history of the people who made them.
Ancient Coins, just like modern ones, reflect the culture they came from, and learning about these coins teaches you a lot of pretty cool stuff about the history of that culture. To browse more articles on coins visit, http://www.coins.jsgenterprises.com
